When I left the UK I thought I had finally escaped all things football. No more having to endure a whole week of football forecasts on TV, followed by a weekend of matches and then a Sunday evening re-living the ‘highlights’ all over again. At last, I thought, I never have to hear the word football again – that was until I arrived in Seattle!
Seattle is home to the Seahawks, the 2014 NFL Superbowl champions (and if you know anything about American Football, you’ll understand why I don’t mention the 2015 Superbowl!). When I look out of my window I can spot at least five “Number 12” blue and green flags flying proudly in the wind, an emblem that is displayed all across the city, and the emblem for the Seahawks.
The number 12 represents the “12th Man” (a.k.a. the Seahawks fans) who support the 11 players on the field with admirable devotion and are famous for being the loudest fans in the NFL. Having been to a game at CenturyLink (the Seahawks home-field) I can certainly vouch for their reputation, the Seahawks fans are LOUD!!!
This Thursday sees the start of the 2015-16 football season. So in honour of my home team, I have frozen ice cubes in blue and green – the Seahawks colours.
Brightly coloured and multi-colour ice cubes are a great way to liven up drinks, to show support for your local team, or to coordinate colour-themed parties and events. I even made patriotic red, white and blue ice cubes to celebrate Independence Day this July.
For multi-colour layered effect ice cubes, half fill the ice cube mould with your first coloured drink and then leave to freeze for 2 hours. Repeat this process with your second coloured drink.
For more colours, simply reduce the amount of each colour you use, ensuring that you freeze each layer completely before adding the next. You can have great fun experimenting with flavours and colours using your choice of cordials, fruit juices, or milkshakes. I used isotonic sports drinks for my cubes as I love their bright colours. However, I wouldn’t recommend using sparkling or fizzy/carbonated beverages as they tend to expand as they freeze.
For my Seahawks ice cubes I used the Tovolo® Perfect Cube Ice Moulds and Tovolo® King Cube Ice Moulds to create different sized cubes for added effect. I really recommend using flexible silicone ice trays, as it is so much easier to pop out the ice cubes compared to traditional rigid plastic trays.
All Tovolo® products featured in this post are now available from the Arugula & Rocket Cookshop.
