As a Brit I was brought up on Baked Beans because baked beans totally rock – fact!
As a child there was nothing better than arriving home from school to a plate of hot buttery toast smothered in baked beans. It’s one of life’s simplest pleasures, an institution, and something that should not to be messed with.
Good ole Heinz beans on toast is one of those foods that I crave the most when in the US, so imagine my surprise when I learnt that Heinz is not a UK company as I had thought, but American!!! How strange that the Americans kicked “our” mighty beans to the curb in favour of baking their own (say what?!), or buying canned ‘Pork and Beans’ instead, which although very tasty, do not contain the mini pork sausages I was expecting – what a disappointment!
So with extreme trepidation, but lots of curiosity I decided to experiment with this Texan Style Baked Beans Recipe. These beans are so unlike the ones I am used to, but as every life coach, mentor, or other similarly named professional will tell you, change is good. So, just for today, I have tossed my trusty can of Heinz to the wayside and ventured into the sunny climes of Texas, adding green chiles, hot pepper, and meaty sausage to my home-made baked beans!
This is a flavourful dish which tastes like it has taken hours of carefully crafting in the kitchen. However, all of the flavour in this recipe comes from the ingredients, rather than the cooking technique, which means it is embarrassingly easy to make. If you don’t believe me, just watch this step-by-step video!
Simply toss all of the ingredients into your slow cooker and stir to combine everything in the delicious texan style sauce. Then turn your slow cooker onto low, paint your nails, have a bubbly bath, put on a face mask and open up that bottle of wine. After 5 hours of pure pampering and relaxation, dinner is done!
I used a combination of kidney and cannellini beans and added extra red chili flakes for an extra spicy kick. Texan Style Baked Beans can be served as a main dish with some delicious Skillet Cornbread to mop up the sauce, or as an impressive and tasty side dish alongside jacket potatoes, corn dogs or sliders.
To make this Texan Style Baked Beans Recipe I used the following equipment:
