Football is not just a game of two halves!
There is nothing that epitomises the American culture more than American Football. It is HUGE, with almost every American being a loyal and passionate fan of their local college and native NFL teams. But for them, football is not just a game, it is also the perfect excuse for game day get-togethers and tailgating.
Not quite what it sounds, tailgating is not the unpleasant experience of having a car drive right up your “backside” (as it means in the UK), but a game day party that’s held in the stadium car park. Excited fans will pack their barbecues, chilled beer, and in some cases even a TV, into the back of their 4×4’s, park up, lower the tailgate and party!
It’s also a real family affair with fans of both teams happily mixing and watching the game together at parties, in the pub, and in the stadium stands. Not just a game, football is a day of fun with impressive cheerleading routines, tasty stadium/game day foods (Kidd Valley Garlic Fries are the best!) and, in the case of the Super Bowl, a spectacular Super Bowl Half-Time Show – which is headlined by Lady Gaga this year, no less!
So if the thought of watching the football normally makes your toes curl, or you simply don’t understand the rules, please don’t give up on the Super Bowl this Sunday. Simply make it your excuse to hold a Super Bowl Party and book the following Monday off work – it’s gonna be a hangover holiday day!
You can watch the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons battle it out at the 51st Super Bowl live from Houston this Sunday (February 5th) on BBC 1 and Sky Sports 1 in the UK. Kick-off is at 11:30pm (UK time), with the half-time Lady Gaga extravaganza starting at around 1am – be sure to have lots of coffee and Red Bull at hand!
