Frozen Riesling Pear Pops

The sun is shining, the waters of Lake Union are shimmering, and the sun loungers on the roof top deck are beckoning. So what’s a girl gonna do to prevent herself becoming a total hot mess?

A nice glass of chilled white wine? Or do I defer to my childhood favourite, a refreshingly cool ice pop? I want to stomp my feet like a spoilt child, I want both and I want them now!

riesling_pear_pops_groovy_pop_mouldsSo I did what any self-respecting woman would do in such a dilemma. I took a bottle of my favourite Riesling and poured it into an ice pop mould, et voila! Hot mess and compromise evaded!

OK, so I have simplified things a little. I didn’t devour 100% pure wine alco-pops – although I wouldn’t blame any of you who might – but I did take some time to contemplate what addition might perfectly complement my German tipple and decided upon light and fruity Pear.

riesling_pear_pops_groovy_mould_finishedThe resulting Frozen Riesling Pear Pops were fabulous – “the girl did good” I told myself smugly, as I grabbed my book and headed for the deck. In fact, they were so cooling and delicious I couldn’t wait to share my new found fave with you.

All you need to do is make some simple syrup by dissolving a little sugar into water over a simmering heat. Once the syrup has cooled a little, add in some freshly chopped pear and a little lemon juice, and toss together.

If the heat is draining your energy, and the thought of prepping the pears and making your own syrup is getting you all hot under the collar, don’t fret. Simply skip this step and use canned pears and a little syrup from the can – simples!

riesling_pear_pops_tovolo_silicone_spoonNow add the pears in syrup – and most importantly – your wine, into a blender or food processor and blend until you get a nice smooth purée. NOTE: for a child-friendly version, simply substitute the wine for water. You can also add as much wine or water as you need/like to fill your moulds or please your tastebuds 😉

Pour the purée into some ice pop moulds and freeze until solid.

Dip the moulds in warm water for several seconds to help release the frozen pops.

riesling_pear_pops_tovolo_groovy_pop_mouldsI used these Tovolo Groovy Pop Moulds not only because they are fairly large and I could sneak a little more wine into them, but they also have clever drip catching handles so I wouldn’t end up with wine all down my arm as I read my book.

Frozen Riesling Pear Pops

  • Servings: 6
  • Difficulty: Easy

  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Water
  • 2 Pears (Peeled, Cored and Chopped)
  • 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • ½ Cup Riesling White Wine (Adult Version)


In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water and bring to a simmer, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

Pour the syrup into a bowl and leave to cool.

Add the pears and lemon juice to the syrup and toss well.

Transfer the pears and syrup to a food processor and add the Water or Riesling. Blend to a smooth purée consistency.

Pour the purée into ice pop moulds and place in the freezer until solid, at least 1 hour.

Dip the moulds in warm water for several seconds to help release the frozen pops.

Can be stored in the freezer for up to 1 week.

NOTE: You can substitute home made syrup and fresh pairs by using 1 can of pears and 4 Tbsps of the syrup from the can. For child-friendly version, substitute the wine for water.
